The River Under the River: 2019 Immersive Facilitator Training

An Immersive Training Program
for Emerging River Writing Facilitators
February 1 through May 18th, 2019

Participants will learn learn and practice the methods that make River Writing work. This training will reveal what goes on under the surface of smooth facilitation. Each participant will have the opportunity to practice facilitating while together we grow the muscles required to witness, hold space, and listen with the heart.

Training to Include:

Three Retreats in SLC:
February 1st & 2nd: Friday Dinner 6-9 & Saturday Introduction Day 10-5— Creating the Container: Inviting Presence, Granting Permission, Making the Seven Agreements. In this practice-oriented training each participant will take turns leading these components in small groups.
March 30th, Saturday 1-5pm: Practical Matters, Protocols & Boundaries
May 18th, Saturday 9-4pm: Poetry and Prompts, Engaging with the Mythopoetic. Participants will be assigned to bring poems and suggest prompts.

Practice Sessions:
Twelve weeks of online practice sessions on Tuesday mornings on Zoom from 7:30- 9AM: 2/5, 2/ 12, 2/19, 2/26, 3/5, 3/12 ( 3 week break) Switching to Tuesday evenings from 7:30-9PM for 4/9, 4/16, 4/23, 4/30, 5/7, 5/14 
(Required for certification: attending 6 minimum including leading an online session as the facilitator. All participants are encouraged to attend as many sessions as possible. Facilitators in training will also be encouraged to invite new participants from outside the circle to fill the session they are scheduled to lead if space is available. )

Opportunity to Lead a One Night Stand in the Salt Lake Studio, or online. ( A requirement for those seeking Certification, unless otherwise actively facilitating.)

Deep Connection to Circle of Peers, including access to an invitation only conversation board on the Nan’s website where facilitators will share their prompts.

Detailed Syllabus for an 8 week River Writing Series, including themes and poetry prompts. (An additional 8 week supplemental syllabus may be offered for purchase in June, if there is sufficient demand.)

Marketing Guidance 

Practical Business Help, including templates for forms

3 Hours of Personal Mentoring and Encouragement with Nan. At least one meeting will be scheduled as follow-up to your facilitation practice, with others to be scheduled when most needed. Could be scheduled in half hour increments anytime in the year 2019. ( A $450 value )

Tuition $2800
$500 non-refundable deposit required to secure a place.
Limited to 10 participants. ( 4 spaces left as of 1/3/19)

Full tuition due before beginning of program. ( Non-refundable and non-transferable due to limited space.) 
Long distance participation will be possible via Zoom, with live attendance at least one SLC retreat day strongly encouraged.
Two textbooks will be required: Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg + poetry anthology to be announced.

Requirements for River Writing Facilitator Certification:
Attendance live or via Zoom for all three training retreats
Full participation in at least 6 online practice sessions
Participation as the facilitator of one entire practice session, followed by a personal consultation and reflection from Nan
A signed contract
A demonstrated proficiency at inviting and exemplifying the Seven Agreements
